When to go straight to a hospital instead

If you have severe facial swelling that is affecting your breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a significant injury to the face or jaw, seek emergency medical care immediately rather than calling us. For everything else, a dental practice is usually the right place to start.

What we can usually deal with quickly

Getting seen sooner usually means less treatment later, and often a simpler repair than if the problem is left.

Severe toothache

Pain that keeps you awake, throbs, or gets worse with hot and cold usually has a cause we can find and treat rather than just numb.

Broken or chipped tooth

A fracture leaves the inside of the tooth exposed. Getting it covered quickly protects what is left and often saves a bigger repair.

Knocked-out tooth

Handle it by the crown and not the root, keep it moist, and call us straight away. Time matters a great deal with this one.

Lost filling or crown

Not usually painful at first, but the tooth underneath is unprotected and can break or decay quickly once it is uncovered.

Swelling or an abscess

Swelling around a tooth or in the gum needs looking at promptly. Call us and describe what you are seeing.

Pain after recent treatment

If something we or another practice did recently is not settling the way it should, call and tell us rather than waiting it out.

Not urgent this minute? Request a callback

If you are in real pain right now, please call (913) 651-2115 instead. A phone call is always faster than a form. If it can wait until we open, send your details and we will ring you back.

Prefer to speak to someone?
Call us on (913) 651-2115 and we will find you a time.

This form is not monitored outside office hours and is not for medical emergencies. Please do not include detailed medical information.

Why call a dentist rather than the ER

Hospital emergency rooms are not equipped to treat most dental problems. They can help with pain and infection, but in most cases they cannot fix the tooth, which means you still need a dentist afterwards.

We treat the cause

An x-ray and an examination tell us what is actually wrong, so the problem gets dealt with rather than postponed.

One practice, start to finish

Fillings, crowns, root canal treatment and extractions are all done here, so you are not sent somewhere else for the repair.

A straight answer on the phone

We will tell you honestly whether we can see you today, and if we cannot, what to do in the meantime.

Emergency questions

Can I be seen the same day?
In many cases yes. Family Dental Care in Leavenworth holds room for same-day emergency appointments wherever possible, for problems such as severe tooth pain, a broken or knocked-out tooth, swelling, or a lost filling or crown. We cannot promise it every single time, because it depends on how full the day already is, but we will tell you honestly on the phone whether we can fit you in. Calling early in the day gives us the best chance of finding you a slot. Call (913) 651-2115.
What if it is the weekend or after hours?
Family Dental Care is open Monday to Thursday from 8:00am to 5:00pm and Friday from 8:00am to 12:00pm, and we are closed on Saturday and Sunday. If you are in pain outside those hours and it is severe, or you have facial swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care straight away. Otherwise, call us as soon as we open and we will do our best to get you in quickly. Our number is (913) 651-2115.
My tooth was knocked out. What should I do right now?
Pick the tooth up by the crown, which is the part you normally chew with, and avoid touching the root. If it is dirty, rinse it very gently with milk or saline rather than scrubbing it. Keep the tooth moist, ideally in milk or held inside the cheek, and get to a dentist as quickly as you can, because the chances of saving a knocked-out tooth drop sharply with time. Call Family Dental Care in Leavenworth on (913) 651-2115 on your way.
Will it cost a fortune?
We accept most major dental insurance plans and our team will check your benefits so you know where you stand before treatment rather than afterwards. If you do not have insurance, flexible payment options are available. For an urgent visit we will examine you, explain what is causing the problem, and give you a clear estimate before any treatment begins, including the option of settling the pain first and planning the rest later. To ask about costs, call (913) 651-2115.
I am not a patient here. Can I still come in?
Yes. You do not need to be an existing patient at Family Dental Care to be seen for an urgent problem, and we regularly help people who are new to us or new to Leavenworth. We also see patients from Fort Leavenworth, Lansing, Basehor, Easton, Tonganoxie, Bonner Springs, and Platte City, Missouri. Bring your insurance details if you have them, and tell us on the phone what is happening so we can prepare. Call (913) 651-2115.
Can I just take painkillers and wait?
Painkillers can make the wait more bearable, but they do not treat what is causing the pain, and dental problems very rarely resolve on their own. A small cavity that could have been a filling can become a root canal or an extraction if it is left long enough, and an untreated infection can spread. If the pain has lasted more than a day or two, or it keeps coming back, it is worth being seen. Call Family Dental Care in Leavenworth on (913) 651-2115.
